SnapChat Apologises for Violent Rihanna and Chris Brown Ad: ‘It Was Reviewed and Approved in Error’

SnapChat has issued an apology after an advertisement referencing Chris Brown’s 2009 assault on then-girlfriend, Rihanna, stirred an outrage.
According to Rap-Up, users spotted the disturbing ad titled ‘Impossible Choices’ which asked users if they would rather “Slap Rihanna” or “Punch Chris Brown.” Many people made a screenshot of it and took to their social media to complain.
“I know that social media ads go through an approval process from the platform,” said activist Brittany Packnett. “This means @Snapchat approved an ad that makes light of domestic violence.”
Is it just me, or is this ad that popped up on my Snapchat extremely tone deaf? Like what were they thinking with this?
Also, former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton slammed the company, saying, “Just awful. Awful that anyone thinks this is funny. Awful that anyone thinks this is appropriate. Awful that any company would approve this.”

The update ain’t the only thing that’s wack over there, friends. https://twitter.com/theroycemann/status/973070617821007872
Just awful. Awful that anyone thinks this is funny. Awful that anyone thinks this is appropriate. Awful that any company would approve this. Thank you Brittany for calling this out.
The company quickly removed the ad and issued a statement to BBC, apologising for the ‘error’.

“The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines,” they said. “We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”
